Mesa theft suspect says he took power tools to give as Christmas gifts

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Newly released court documents are revealing more about a Mesa man police say is behind more than a dozen thefts at Home Depot stores around the Valley.

Jordan Ty Morrell, 31, was arrested Friday by Scottsdale police on accusations of organized retail theft, possession of a canceled or suspended driver’s license, and knowingly displaying a fake license plate.

Scottsdale police said Morrell, who was previously convicted of shoplifting, is suspected of stealing pricey power tools from 15 Home Depot locations between Nov. 28 and Dec. 23. In total, he’s facing 49 charges for thefts totaling $11,343, court records showed.

Investigators first linked Morrell to the crime after detectives took a report of shoplifting from the Home Depot store near 90th Street and Shea Boulevard on Dec. 7. Police said he was known to be driving a gray Nissan Sentra with an unregistered license plate.

Officers then scoped out the car and found it last Friday in Tempe near Mill Avenue and Ellis Drive, just north of Baseline Road.

Authorities pulled him over, and Morrell reportedly admitted that his driver’s license was suspended and that the license plate didn’t belong to that car.

Police arrested him while he was wearing the same shoes and sweater seen in security footage from some of the shoplifting cases, authorities said.

Once in custody, investigators interviewed him, and he said he had previously been convicted in Arizona for shoplifting once before and allegedly admitted to stealing from the north Scottsdale Home Depot on Dec. 2.

Morrell explained that on that day, he took three combo power drill sets as “Christmas gifts” before asking for a lawyer and stopped talking, per court papers. Scottsdale police said some tools were found for sale online.

Morrell was listed as living in Mesa, but police noted he has no permanent address, no family in Arizona, has ties to Utah and Idaho, and is believed to be unemployed despite claiming to have a job.

He was booked into the Maricopa County jail on a $7,500 bond.
