Yacht club members express concerns about unaddressed security, maintenance issues

Members of The Port Arthur Yacht Club on Pleasure Island are raising concerns about what they call a rash of criminal activity including threats.

“We have had a rash of criminal activity from simple petty theft to harassment of some of the members, but it’s all tied to the really big problem. It’s been a lack of security and access into the marina,” says David Bradley, the club’s Vice Commodore.

According to Bradley, requests to deal with security problems and reports of suspected drug activity have mostly gone unaddressed.

“The latest response to this issue with the drug activity, suspected drug activity was a statement that we would hope, or management hopes an increased police patrol would solve the problem. That’s unacceptable,” adds Bradley

Club members say rent for their boats increased by 80% in some cases two years ago, but due to security and maintenance among other issues, they don’t believe they’re getting their money’s worth.

“We have no grocery stores, we have no gas available on the island, we have no repair facilities, we have no restaurants,” says Bradley.

Bradley says members hope by speaking up changes will be made to improve security, and they’ll once again find it smooth sailing at the yacht club.
